GUARDIAN HOMES
What is a Guardian Home?
All of our precious Australian Labradoodles will live wonderful lives in nurturing homes whether they are future, present or retired breeding dogs. Since Sunny Heart Doodles is not a kennel, our breeding dogs will always be cherished and pampered parts of wonderful families. Every single dog lives in a house full of love. This is a very important value to our breeding program.
We use Guardian Homes to ensure that our breeding dogs are properly socialized, trained and LOVED in an adoring family environment. These homes allow us to responsibly contribute to developing the Australian Labradoodle breed. Guardian families, within about an hour of Morristown, New Jersey, get a sweet, happy and health-tested puppy, at no cost, that will be their dog forever. In exchange, Sunny Heart Doodles retains the breeding rights for the duration of our contract together.
By implementing a Guardian Home Program, our breeding dogs get to be a beloved family member, receive all the love and care they could ever want, and still participate in further developing this fabulous breed. When you join our Guardian Home Program, you become a family to a puppy that has all the best qualities and characteristics of Australian Labradoodles including excellent health, structure, lineage, coat, and temperament. You receive all of this without the initial cost of purchasing a puppy.
How does the SHD Guardian Home work?
The Guardian Home becomes the breeding dog’s forever home, from puppyhood through breeding and after retirement from breeding. The Guardian Family is responsible for all care and costs not related to breeding or pregnancy. This includes providing a healthy high quality diet of food approved by Sunny Heart Doodles, maintaining a grooming schedule, staying up-to-date on routine vet visits and vaccinations, administering proper flea and tick medications, and making sure teeth stay clean. As with any other pet, the guardian family is responsible for exercising, socializing, and training the dog according to approved training curriculum. While the dog is breeding, Sunny Heart Doodles retains ownership and breeding rights. Once the dog is finished with the breeding contract (usually 4 litters for females and 5 years for males), Sunny Heart Doodles will spay or neuter the dog at no cost to the Guardian Family and pet ownership will be transferred to the family. The dog will live with his or her family happily ever after.
are there any guardian opportunities now?
We’re currently looking for Guardian Families for a few upcoming breeding prospects, including Navy, Story and a couple boy prospects.
Navy is from Una and Fryler’s Swimply the Best litter! Navy is a happy-go-lucky puppy who has beautiful human-focus and a light-hearted personality. She is always happy, loves to have fun and enjoys interaction! I expect Navy to grow to be about 11-13 lbs.
Story is from Letti and Fryler’s Endless Summer litter! Story is a sweet little girl who has great trainability. She is easygoing and even at a young age of just 10 weeks, showed off some pretty sweet manners. I expect Story to grow to about 20 lbs.
We’re also going to be welcoming a boy (or possibly two!) to our program from other breeders to bring new DNA into our lines. We are seeking guardians families for those males, who will mature to about 15 lbs. I absolutely love watching them grow so far and I’d be happy to share photos of them with serious applicants. They’re cutie pies!
Continue reading below if you’d like to apply to be the forever family for one of our sweethearts! If you’re accessible to Morristown, NJ (the closer, the better) and want to offer one of our treasured breeding dogs lots of quality time and LOVE, I’d love to hear from you. I look forward to seeing your application!
What is the timeline for breeding?
Mother Nature has the final say with heat cycles, which usually happen every 6-8 months. Gestation lasts approximately 63 days and the counting begins at ovulation. The mom will remain with her guardian family throughout her pregnancies and come to Sunny Heart Doodles to whelp her puppies about 1 week before her estimated due date. She will remain with Sunny Heart Doodles, where she will be treated like a queen, until the puppies are 6-7 weeks old. Once the mom weans her puppies, she will go back to her Guardian Family.
Our dads will start siring litters at about 12 months of age. Since heat cycles can be unpredictable, our dads will sometimes need to be available with little notice. When a dad is needed for breeding, he will come to Sunny Heart Doodles to accommodate the mom. This can be for just a few hours at a time over the course of a few days.
